The thickest and juiciest one!

cziplee-book-review

Now showing in the theaters, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix is the thickest book in the series (Book #7 included). The 870 page book reveals so much more and leaves us asking even more questions!

The story kicks off before Harry heads back to Hogwarts, he received an expulsion letter for performing magic outside the school. He is ordered to appear at a hearing at the Ministry of Magic and managed to clear himself of all charges! Phew!

Meanwhile a secret society, the Order of the Phoenix, has been formed to combat Voldemort, rumored to be rebuilding his army of Death Eaters. This throws the wizarding world into chaos and divides the believers (the Order of Phoenix) and those who don't believe in Voldemort's return!

An official from the Ministry of Magic, the cruel Dolores Umbridge is sent to Hogwarts as the new Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher. She turns out to be a spy for the Ministry too!

The plot thickens with every turn of the page, as we discover the Harry, Hermione and Ron-led Dumbledore's Army, the death of a close friend and Harry's first
kiss! =)...plus the chilling prophecy by Dumbledore: Harry must kill Voldemort or be murdered by him! Only one of them will survive!

Doing right is always the hardest thing!

cziplee-book-review

"It's a strange thing, but when you are dreading something, and would give anything to slow down time, it has a disobliging habit of speeding up." -Harry Potter & the Goblet of Fire-

HP not easy

In Book #4, signs emerged that Harry's number one nemesis, the evil Voldemort is marshalling his forces! Harry's fourth year at Hogwarts marks the Quidditch World Cup where Voldemort's followers gather and wreak havoc.

Another event, the legendary Triwizard Tournament also takes place, where student representatives from three different wizarding schools compete in a series of increasingly challenging contests. The 'Goblet of Fire' judges who gets in and who doesn't. On one fateful night, three champions are selected. But then the Goblet spits out one other. Harry's.

These two major events point to the return of Lord Voldemort. Dumbledore and the other teachers sense it, but it is inevitable. And Harry is no longer safe at Hogwarts

Will Harry be able to rise to the challenge for the Tri Wizard Tournament while keeping up with school or will the challenges along with Voldemort's rebirth be too much for Harry?

This fourth book is definitely the most dramatic, and also the scariest, so far! And oh, Harry figures that girls are soooo complicated! =)

What did we learn from Harry Potter 1-3?

In book 1, we learn about that there are more important things in life than books and cleverness...Friendship!
In the
Chamber of Secrets, we realise that the choices we make shows who we truly are, not our abilities.

So in Book 3: Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban

HP3A HP3K

As he enter his third year at Hogwarts, Harry Potter has had enough of his relatives and he finally runs away from them. Instead of running away from trouble he finds himself facing trouble from more than one side: for using magic outside the school and from the news that a notorious criminal, serial killer Sirius Black, has escaped the high-security wizard's prison at Azkaban and apparently is headed for Harry. The school calls in supernatural help against Black in the form of Dementors (prison guards that drain the hope and happiness out of everyone around them) but unusual things continue to put Harry in peril.

The Dementors

picture from the Harry Potter Lexicon

He is thrown into a confusing panoply of shifting alliegences and shifting shapes where nobody is who or what they seem. Who is the real criminal? What is the real crime? Who is telling or knows the truth? On a brighter note, Harry gets a firebolt - a top of the line high performance flying broom... =)

We learned that:

Those we have lost are always with us, especially when we need them the most!

If you missed our previous Harry Potter post, be sure to check it out - all the questions we are asking as we anticipate the final chapter!

On to the Chamber of Secrets!

cziplee-book-review

Now Open

So the story picks up after a miserable summer with the Dursleys(Harry's human relatives), when Harry returns for another exciting year at Hogwarts! Yet something strange is happening at his school, a monster stalks the school grounds.

Students are being petrified (and by this, we mean - frozen in fear, think "The Ring", that sort of effect but "toned down" to cater to the younger audience) and a mysterious saying has been written on the wall:

"For the chamber of secrets has been opened!"
and another stating

"Ginny Weasley..her skeletons will lie forever".

Now that's way scary! Then again, morbidness somehow does interest everyone.

And who are the brave ones to rescue the lot?

You guessed it right! Harry and his loyal compatriots, Hermione, who has taken on a "feline" nature, as well as Ron, Moaning Myrtle (what a name, huh) and many others have come to literally- save the day. Look out for house-elf called Dobby! (cute, huh?)

If that has whet your appetite, well, the story is certainly getting to be a juicy, tender nice piece of steak, with bacon strips, mashed potatoes...Well, you get the picture =)

Quoted fortunately in the Chamber of Secrets:

"It is our choices, Harry, that show what we truly are, far more than our abilities."

-Aldus Dumbledore-

One day Harry Potter discovers that he is a wizard, and was sent to Hogwarts, a school especially for wizards and witches, located far from London. One cool thing about going to Hogwarts was this invisible train platform: Platform Nine and three-quarters!!

cziplee-book-review

There, he learns more about his family, and his forbidden past and the whole history of ancient wizards and witches. He was brought into another world where magic exists along with spells and potions.

He also befriends Ron Weasley, the boy with flaming red hair and a muggle-born witch, Hermione. With his new powers he saves his life and a very precious stone that is hidden beneath Hogwartss castle walls: The Philosopher's Stone. For One More Day by Mitch Albom

I devoured his book, page by page in just one day.

In specific? 4 hours! (And worth every cent I paid for the book!)

It was such an easy read, with the big print and a catchy storyline.

Best of all? It was well researched and based on a real life story.

More like? Iit was Albom's way of telling us to appreciate what we have right now.

His style of writing is easy - straight to the point, bits and pieces of adjectives to paint you a picture and you can see his love of sports jumping right off the pages. I would think one of his reason for choosing this tale above the rest of "unnatural" or "supernatural" tales was because this was very much - sports related, and Albom is a true blue sports journalist.

It is a fantastic read with Albom recounting the life of Charley page by page, the many times his mother stood up for him, and the times he never stood up for his mother.

It’s bittersweet to think that a child has to choose to "love" either his mom or his dad from young - and even when he turns into an adult - he still yearns for his dad's approval.

The twist or rather, the surreal element of the book is when he tries to commit suicide, and once again - in just that one day - he meets his mother once more. He talks to her, tries to right all the wrong - talk about his hurts, his appreciation for her (finally) and how he tries to come to term with his failed marriage and daughter's rejection of him.

His ma tells him that his relationship with his loved ones is still salvageable and when he finally wakes up and recovers - he does make right his wrongs.

People talk about the "light at the end of a dark tunnel", "supernatural experiences", "out of body experience", well this is once well-researched story where a credible name like Albom who puts forth his evidence for such occurrences. It is in part, quite eerie and yet - surreal (sorry, I love this word!) - because the three people his mum helps to "prettify" are actual people, who meet their Maker right on the day (or close enough date and time) to when he was experiencing that one more day with his mum.

Overall, it is a very good book - with a well written ending to the tale, and certainly, a book which you want to get for people who just don't have the time to appreciate their loved ones whilst they are still around.
