All about LOVE!
It has been a wonderful month off from the store, celebrating Christmas, the New Year then now, Chinese New Year. From the turkeys to the presents. To the lovely homemade repertoire from aunts and grandmas alike, to the mouthwatering baked goods (personal favourite: Kuih Karpet aka Love Letters) that seems to be a regular fixture in every household, it has truly been a wonderful occasion for all!
Not forgetting the many "Ang Pows" (red packets) collected and winnings from the gambling table for the lucky few, this Chinese New Year certainly makes for a great transition to one of my all time favourites: Valentine's Day!
Last year, I showed some Crashing potential. This year, The Remix:
I have been scouring both stores for some Valentine's Day gift ideas. Here's what I found at CzipLee:
1. Love-stories:
From the flush of first love in Turgenev's First Love, part of the highly regarded 'Great Loves' series from Penguin, to those Vintage Classics with books that change the world, with books from the "it's a girl thing" people at LBD and to the evergreen and well loved Jane Austen.
Fall in love with a book this Valentine's...=)

2. Love-inks:
A Pilot Ageless futuristic pen in RED of course:
Last year's top selling Valentine's Day product. More stocks are now available:

If you do not know what a Moleskine RED diary yet, you don't know what you are missing out! =) CzipLee has LIMITED STOCKS of the Moleskine Twin Set - Limited Edition - the only RED range left. Go on spoil yourself or your object of affection this Valentine's:
Or if not, get the RED Moleskine Van Gogh Museum series (as featured in Zero Degrees Feb issue) A vibrant hard cover notebook lined with shantung silk, but still boasting the time-tested durability that ensures musings are kept safe from the elements.
4. Love-journeys
To fuel your travel bug this year, see Asia in 2008 with the ultimate Asian travel companion:

The Festival of Lights!
Just after the Hari Raya festivity, we will soon celebrate Deepavali (aka the 'Festival of Lights') tomorrow! But don't worry,

Friday, October 12, 2007
Selamat Hari Raya!
This weekend, our Muslim friends celebrate the festival of Aidilfitri, more popularly known as Hari Raya Puasa, or simply Hari Raya (Day of Celebration) in Malaysia. This is to mark the culmination of Ramadhan, the holy month of fasting. It is a joyous occasion for Muslims, as it signifies a personal triumph, a victory of self-restraint and abstinence, symbolising purification and renewal. With that...

CzipLee will be closed for the Raya weekend from
13 October - 15 October, 2007
Business will resume as usual on
16 October, 2007

What you should NOT do during your exams!

1. Bring a pillow. Fall asleep (or pretend to) until the last 15 minutes. Wake up, say "oh geez, better get cracking" and do some gibberish work. Turn it in a few minutes early.
2. Bring cheerleaders.
3. Do the exam with crayons, paint, or fluorescent markers.
4. Try to get your friends or everyone in the room to do the wave.
5. Get deliveries of candy, flowers, balloons, telegrams, etc. . . sent to you every few minutes throughout the exam.
6. Bring a water pistol with you.
7. Bring a black marker. Return the exam with all questions and answers completely blacked out.
8. Every five minutes, stand up, collect all your things, move to another seat, continue with the exam.
9. Turn in the exam approximately 30 minutes into it. As you walk out, start commenting on how easy it was.
10. Bring pets.
MAKE SURE YOU DON'T DO ANY OF THESE, huh?!! =)

Think Green!
This Saturday, Malaysia celebrates World Environment Day 2007 with a host of events at FRIM. Here's the list:1. Live simply
Every product we use, whether it’s a paper cup, dress or car, leaves an ecological footprint. Think about living with less, so as to tread lighter on Earth.
Before discarding something, first consider how it can be reused.
Decline or return promotional pamphlets distributed at public places if you’re not interested in what’s on offer. Refuse junk mail if you don’t want to read it.
4. Go paper-less
Send e-cards and emails rather than letters, memos and cards. The pulp and paper industry is the world's fifth largest industrial consumer of energy and uses more water to produce a tonne of product than any other business.
Avoid products packed individually or for single use, such as beverage sachets or biscuits in small packs. Those foils are not recycled, and so add to waste heaps.
6. Go for fresh
Why buy fruit juices in cartons and create waste? Recycling aseptic packaging, which is made of 75% paper, 20% polyethylene and 5% aluminium foil, uses up lots of water and energy. Furthermore, current collection for recycling is poor. Juice fresh fruits instead. It will be free of sweeteners, colourings, preservatives – and trash.
7. Say 'No' to plastic bags
They do not degrade, mar the landscape and clog up rivers and seas. Plastics are derived from petroleum, so producing them emits greenhouse gases, too. Decline a plastic bag if your purchase is small and easy to carry. Try not to accumulate any new plastic bags for a week; you will see that it is not that difficult.
8. Bring a bag
Keep cloth bags in your car so they are always at hand should you decide to go shopping or marketing.
9. Use them again
Those plastic bags used to pack vegetables in supermarkets can be reused. Don't try to remove the price sticker as this will tear the flimsy bags. Turn them inside out instead.
10. Don't add to waste heaps
Separate paper, plastics, metals, glass and aseptic carton for recycling. If you cannot drop them off at recycling centres, leave them outside for the garbage collector. Recycling saves the landscape from dumps, reduces usage of energy and raw materials, and prevents emissions of methane.
So do your part today, when you come into CzipLee Books & Stationery - if you can make do without the plastic bags, just say NO! We are doing our bit to reduce the plastics!"You look at that river gently flowing by. You notice the leaves rustling with
the wind. You hear the birds; you hear the tree frogs. In the distance you hear
a cow. You feel the grass. The mud gives a little bit on the river bank. It's
quiet; it's peaceful. And all of a sudden, it's a gear shift inside you. And
it's like taking a deep breath and going, "Oh yeah, I forgot about this."

Crash
Flying CupidKid with CRASH potential:
I love taglines, movie taglines. It allows you to intepret your own version of the movie before you watch it. Its effective, more so than the title of course.
I suppose with CzipKid, we (the CzipLee crew) didn't really know where we were heading with it. A family-owned books and stationery business with a cartoon character as its mascot? Hahhahahaha!
Well, being Chinese we were thinking more of an animal so that we could identify with its traits and character...we even narrowed down to 2: a tortoise or a tiger!
Somehow, CzipKid's creator, the artist known as Ming or the Artmaker created a character that squashed all animal instincts!
It started with this and then it became manga before turning up in pen. When we saw the final piece, we knew we had to go with it.
But somehow, with the kid, we thought we knew who he is or who/where he will be. But right now, we just don't know! He's grown from just on paper to a life-size cut-out that appears in most events that CzipLee takes part.
And then there's CzipKid's evolution on the website:
So the BIG question is: Where to next for CzipKid? Yes, we've got the whole CzipLand going but really, we don't know...don't know who the kid really is or who he can be. Why don't you tell us?
PS: I tell you what, being Valentine's Day and all, feel free to use CupidKid in your blog or publication. I would appreciate an attribution back to this post or this website! (but of course it's not compulsory :)) Also, don't forget to check out CzipKid's creator's site too!

Oh... the stuff of legends!
This is CzipKid:
you can read all about him from here!
Anyway, this is what you are here for: =)
19 October 2006 - There was a mysterious drop-off at CzipLee Books & Stationery Bangsar, this afternoon shortly after lunch.
Four cartons labeled with the very familiar Cathay Pacific air-freight stickers alongside two over-sized boxes, were neatly stacked at a corner. Hmmm...could it be a wrong delivery? Or a surprise gift from an overzealous CzipLee fan from Hong Kong?
Just to share, they looked like this:
Well, with our name clearly printed on the boxes, doubt the delivery man made a mistake. So here goes! We opened the two over-sized ones first and we got this:
We went like 'Huh?!' Then we moved on to and to our delight and excitement, we realise that "IT" has finally arrived!
Drumroll please...

Lil Yogis Sweep Through CzipLee Bangsar!
I had some friends over the other day from this "oh-so-cooool" Yoga centre called Yoga2Health or Y2H. My friends or Lil' Yogis as they are more popularly known were on a lantern festival cum Halloween walk around the neighbourhood. They made CzipLee Bangsar their last and final stop before heading back to Y2H, which is just right up the road from our place. We had some goodie bags filled with sponsored stationery (think Faber-Castell & Stabilo!) and some delicious munchies for all of them.
After making their presence known in the store with their laughter and their infectious marvel of discovering all the cool stationery and books in the store, they settled down for some pictures before literally "blowing" their way out! (All of them had whistles with them!)
Check out the photos below that we took together with me of course:

For One More Day by Mitch Albom
I devoured his book, page by page in just one day.
In specific? 4 hours! (And worth every cent I paid for the book!)
It was such an easy read, with the big print and a catchy storyline.
Best of all? It was well researched and based on a real life story.
More like? Iit was Albom's way of telling us to appreciate what we have right now.
His style of writing is easy - straight to the point, bits and pieces of adjectives to paint you a picture and you can see his love of sports jumping right off the pages. I would think one of his reason for choosing this tale above the rest of "unnatural" or "supernatural" tales was because this was very much - sports related, and Albom is a true blue sports journalist.
It is a fantastic read with Albom recounting the life of Charley page by page, the many times his mother stood up for him, and the times he never stood up for his mother.
It’s bittersweet to think that a child has to choose to "love" either his mom or his dad from young - and even when he turns into an adult - he still yearns for his dad's approval.
The twist or rather, the surreal element of the book is when he tries to commit suicide, and once again - in just that one day - he meets his mother once more. He talks to her, tries to right all the wrong - talk about his hurts, his appreciation for her (finally) and how he tries to come to term with his failed marriage and daughter's rejection of him.
His ma tells him that his relationship with his loved ones is still salvageable and when he finally wakes up and recovers - he does make right his wrongs.
People talk about the "light at the end of a dark tunnel", "supernatural experiences", "out of body experience", well this is once well-researched story where a credible name like Albom who puts forth his evidence for such occurrences. It is in part, quite eerie and yet - surreal (sorry, I love this word!) - because the three people his mum helps to "prettify" are actual people, who meet their Maker right on the day (or close enough date and time) to when he was experiencing that one more day with his mum.
Overall, it is a very good book - with a well written ending to the tale, and certainly, a book which you want to get for people who just don't have the time to appreciate their loved ones whilst they are still around.
'For One More Day' is availabe in CzipLee. For more information, please visit cziplee.com!

My Favourite Roald Dahl Books
From chocolate rivers, oompa loompa's to Big Friendly Giants (BFGs) and little girls that possess great psyhic powers: there is only one man we credit all this toAnd what's more, there is actually a "Celebrate Roald Dahl Day" which is today!
September 13, 2006!
There's certainly much to thank Roald Dahl for. I remember him for:

Matilda:
She was an inspiration to me, when I didn't like school and wanted to ZAP all those bad teachers away.

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory:
I loved the way Charlie cared and loved for his family, and how everyone ate cabbage soup everyday and slept in the same bed (his two sets of grandparents).Who could forget the amazing glass elevator, the notorious kid that kept picking his nose and the rather eccentric owner of the chocolate factory. It was magical!
BFG:To my horror, giants stole kids sleeping soundly in their beds to gobble them up in giant land. But Big Friendly Giant gangs up with a young orphan (whom he also quietly steals away while she sleeps soundly) to help him! Heroism personified with Roald Dahl always battling for the orphan's plights!

Witches:
A bittersweet tale of a little boy orphaned from young, and brought up by his grandmother who often warned him about witches (like how our parents would warn us of not speaking to strangers!). Who can forget the dramatic tale of a witches conference being held during his holiday getaway with his grandma and how the the little boy gets turned into a mouse! And poor grandma has a mouse for a grandchild!
Boy: I loved it. From the sweets he ate - gob stoppers to liquorices to quaint English meals and his games; his accidents, his very, very honest accounts of life. It was surreal.
Suffice to say, Roald Dahl is one of my favourite authors - so 3 cheers to celebrating
"Roald Dahl's Day!"

Artist Notes: 2 drawings with a brush. And I got the feel of it, just need to clean up the edges. Add a bit of cuteness and sophistication.
There is a thing about cartoons, the less detail it has, the more people will project their own emotions on to it. The lack of a mouth invites you to decide CzipKid's mood. Eureka, a new icon is born!

Manga 2.1
On that cue of using what we are given, colours were added to Manga-me:

Artist notes:
For the colour scheme I think i was influenced alot by the recent LOTR movies. In hindsight The colour looks a bit too dull. I would have continued in this direction. But together with the Great Folks at CzipLee, we decided we wanted something more appealing to a wider audience. This might capture a generation of LOTR fans. But CzipLee was looking for better.
So once again, it's back to the drawing board. Show them thee drawing board!

2.0: The Manga Version
Artist Notes:
I started by doing a lot of pages of sketches to loosen up. I drew characters I knew. I drew all the icons: Calvin. Snoopy. Bone. Then I drew and drew...well I just filled up pages till I felt I was loose enough.
Next I took a good look at the Cziplee Logo. Czipkid would have to connect some way with the logo. I used a chinese brush pen to get a similar line quality.
Then *BLAM*! One cute head, then bows and arrows. And i'm satisfied.
In the end that drawing had the essence, but it was too roughly drawn and too fierce..
With that taken into acount. I tightened up the drawing and made this guy happier a bit. And played with the proportions. And that is how this version on Manga CzipKid came about.

The Making 1.0
for starters this is me, version 1.0:

This was well liked except for the fact that I looked angry and fierce! So it was back to the drawing board for the artist!
(Next up... I get 'Manga-nised'!)

It works the same for CzipKid, CzipLee and anything Czip. So, CzipLee is pronounced as Z-I-P Lee.
Have fun! Next up, I will let you know how I actually came to be. Nope, it's not the big bang! Just a big splat of INK! Stay tune, ya?! =)
