Earth Hour 2008: Switched off!
After witnessing the Sydney event last year, and learning that it has gone global; we are proud to be jumping on the bandwagon: Earth Hour: March 29, 2008 8 - 9 PM - Cities around the world will join together in literally turning off the lights for one hour to offer leadership and symbolize their commitment to finding climate change solutions. - Lights will be turned off at iconic buildings and national landmarks from 8 - 9 pm - Local businesses and restaurants will also be asked to turn off their lights. - People at home can take advantage of the hour by replacing their standard light bulbs with energy-efficient compact fluorescent bulbs. So for just one hour tonight, CzipLee Bangsar will be a lot 'darker'. Not total darkness, just enough! For more on EH2008, check here. Its not too late to sign up! CzipLee. All about LOVE!

It has been a wonderful month off from the store, celebrating Christmas, the New Year then now, Chinese New Year. From the turkeys to the presents. To the lovely homemade repertoire from aunts and grandmas alike, to the mouthwatering baked goods (personal favourite: Kuih Karpet aka Love Letters) that seems to be a regular fixture in every household, it has truly been a wonderful occasion for all! Not forgetting the many "Ang Pows" (red packets) collected and winnings from the gambling table for the lucky few, this Chinese New Year certainly makes for a great transition to one of my all time favourites: Valentine's Day!
Last year, I showed some Crashing potential. This year, The Remix:
I have been scouring both stores for some Valentine's Day gift ideas. Here's what I found at CzipLee:

From the flush of first love in Turgenev's First Love, part of the highly regarded 'Great Loves' series from Penguin, to those Vintage Classics with books that change the world, with books from the "it's a girl thing" people at LBD and to the evergreen and well loved Jane Austen. Fall in love with a book this Valentine's...=)
2. Love-inks:

Selamat Hari Raya!
This weekend, our Muslim friends celebrate the festival of Aidilfitri, more popularly known as Hari Raya Puasa, or simply Hari Raya (Day of Celebration) in Malaysia. This is to mark the culmination of Ramadhan, the holy month of fasting. It is a joyous occasion for Muslims, as it signifies a personal triumph, a victory of self-restraint and abstinence, symbolising purification and renewal. With that...
CzipLee will be closed for the Raya weekend from 13 October - 15 October, 2007
Business will resume as usual on 16 October, 2007

Saturday Nights @ CzipLee
For the past Saturday nights, we at CzipLee and the patrons of Bangsar have been treated to a very special after hours performance by this very talented group of artists. They are from the Bantus Capoeira Malaysia! They are not just any normal artists, they are CAPOEIRA artists! Capoeira is a Brazilian fight-dance, game, and martial art created by enslaved Africans during the 19th Century [1] Participants form a roda (circle) and take turns playing instruments, singing, and sparring in pairs in the centre of the circle. The game is marked by fluid acrobatic play, feints, subterfuge, and extensive use of groundwork, as well as sweeps, kicks, and headbutts. Less frequently, elbow-strikes, slaps, punches, and body-throws are used. Technique and strategy are the key elements to playing a good game. Capoeira has three main styles, known as "regional", "Angola", and the less-well defined "contemporanea". (Source: WIKI of course!) Check out some photos:
So don't miss out on Bantus Malaysia's Public Roda! Come by while they are still in the neighbourhood. For more information, you can contact them:

Think Green!
This Saturday, Malaysia celebrates World Environment Day 2007 with a host of events at FRIM. Here's the list:
Meet the new version of me: You can call me CzipF-O-EKid! =)
1. Live simply Every product we use, whether it’s a paper cup, dress or car, leaves an ecological footprint. Think about living with less, so as to tread lighter on Earth.
2. Think before you throw Before discarding something, first consider how it can be reused.
3. Say no to flyers Decline or return promotional pamphlets distributed at public places if you’re not interested in what’s on offer. Refuse junk mail if you don’t want to read it. 4. Go paper-less Send e-cards and emails rather than letters, memos and cards. The pulp and paper industry is the world's fifth largest industrial consumer of energy and uses more water to produce a tonne of product than any other business.
5. Buy in bulk Avoid products packed individually or for single use, such as beverage sachets or biscuits in small packs. Those foils are not recycled, and so add to waste heaps. 6. Go for fresh Why buy fruit juices in cartons and create waste? Recycling aseptic packaging, which is made of 75% paper, 20% polyethylene and 5% aluminium foil, uses up lots of water and energy. Furthermore, current collection for recycling is poor. Juice fresh fruits instead. It will be free of sweeteners, colourings, preservatives – and trash.
7. Say 'No' to plastic bags They do not degrade, mar the landscape and clog up rivers and seas. Plastics are derived from petroleum, so producing them emits greenhouse gases, too. Decline a plastic bag if your purchase is small and easy to carry. Try not to accumulate any new plastic bags for a week; you will see that it is not that difficult.
8. Bring a bag Keep cloth bags in your car so they are always at hand should you decide to go shopping or marketing.
9. Use them again Those plastic bags used to pack vegetables in supermarkets can be reused. Don't try to remove the price sticker as this will tear the flimsy bags. Turn them inside out instead.
10. Don't add to waste heaps Separate paper, plastics, metals, glass and aseptic carton for recycling. If you cannot drop them off at recycling centres, leave them outside for the garbage collector. Recycling saves the landscape from dumps, reduces usage of energy and raw materials, and prevents emissions of methane.
For more recycling ideas or how you can support or work for the environment, simply put just:
So do your part today, when you come into CzipLee Books & Stationery - if you can make do without the plastic bags, just say NO! We are doing our bit to reduce the plastics!"You look at that river gently flowing by. You notice the leaves rustling with the wind. You hear the birds; you hear the tree frogs. In the distance you hear a cow. You feel the grass. The mud gives a little bit on the river bank. It's quiet; it's peaceful. And all of a sudden, it's a gear shift inside you. And it's like taking a deep breath and going, "Oh yeah, I forgot about this." -Al Gore in the opening monologue of An Inconvenient Truth- technorati tags: Think Green Green Every Day Malaysia World Environment Day 2007 Green Fest FRIM CzipKid Friends of the Earth FOE The Star newspaper Malaysia recycle environment plastic bags paper waste CzipLee Books Stationery Bangsar Kajang CzipLee An Inconvenient Truth Al Gore Labels: CzipKid, CzipLee, Events
