Minx is part of the DC Comics family.

DC Comics, if you do not already know, is one of the world's largest comic publisher! They have introduced a large number of well-known characters, including Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, and their teammates in the Justice League, who are among the medium's most popular and influential.

Now, they bring us the Minx line, aimed at teenage girls, following the tried and tested “young woman finding herself” formula.

It does the whole genre so well, that all of us enjoyed reading the whole series (even the guys in the Czip team!).

Books410: Wild At Heart

Wild At Heart

Book: Paperback105 x 175mm272 pagesISBN 9780785266941RM 10.00Books For Life

Helping men rediscover their masculine heart, this guide to understanding Christian manhood and Christian men offers a refreshing break from the chorus of voices urging men to be more responsible, reliable, dutiful...and dead.

"God designed men to be dangerous," says John Eldredge.

Simply look at the dreams and desires written in the heart of every boy:

To be a hero, to be a warrior, to live a life of adventure and risk.

Sadly, most men abandon those dreams and desires-aided by a Christianity that feels like nothing more than pressure to be a "nice guy." It is no wonder that many men avoid church, and those who go are often passive and bored to death. In this provocative book, Eldredge gives women a look inside the true heart of a man and gives men permission to be what God designed them to be-dangerous, passionate, alive, and free.

Books410: Half-Time

A thought provoking book for anyone who desires to live a meaningful life!

Half Time

Book: Paperback105 x 182mm272 pagesISBN 9780310257790RM 10.00Books For Life

WHAT IS HALF TIME?

Our life is like a football game where there is a First Half and a Second Half.
If in the First Half, we play hard to score goals, at Half Time, we take a break to reflect on our success and to strategise our game for the Second Half. Similarly in life, many people arrive at mid-life having achieved some measure of success and wondering how they should live in their Second Half.
The accolades of success cannot silence their soul's yearning for significance. Bob Buford calls this stage of life "Half-Time", and those who search for significance he aptly calls "Halftimers".
Listening to the Gentle Whisper (pp. 25, 26)

"Then a great and powerful wind tore the mountains apart and shattered the rocks
before the Lord, but the Lord was not in the wind. After the wind there was an
earthquake, but the Lord was not in the earthquake. After the earthquake came a
fire, but the Lord was not in the fire. And after the fire came a gentle
whisper." 1 Kings 19:11b-12

"I have not always paid attention to my life. To be honest, I only began paying close attention when I reached my early forties and found myself in a success panic. I was the president and CEO of a tremendously successful cable television company. I was fully engaged in a good and growing marriage. We had a son who was — there's no more appropriate way to say it — a prize. And, of course, there was something gnawing at me. How was it that I could be so successful, so fortunate, and yet so frustratingly unfulfilled. I knew perfectly well what I believed about business strategies and practices, family relationships, and the importance of friends. But I had not decided how I was going to reconcile all of these competing interests. And, as for the most important issue of all, my life of faith, I knew what I believed, but I didn't really know what I planned to do about what I believed. It was then that I started to wrestle with what I wanted out of the second half of my life." -Bob Buford-

The thickest and juiciest one!

cziplee-book-review

Now showing in the theaters, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix is the thickest book in the series (Book #7 included). The 870 page book reveals so much more and leaves us asking even more questions!

The story kicks off before Harry heads back to Hogwarts, he received an expulsion letter for performing magic outside the school. He is ordered to appear at a hearing at the Ministry of Magic and managed to clear himself of all charges! Phew!

Meanwhile a secret society, the Order of the Phoenix, has been formed to combat Voldemort, rumored to be rebuilding his army of Death Eaters. This throws the wizarding world into chaos and divides the believers (the Order of Phoenix) and those who don't believe in Voldemort's return!

An official from the Ministry of Magic, the cruel Dolores Umbridge is sent to Hogwarts as the new Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher. She turns out to be a spy for the Ministry too!

The plot thickens with every turn of the page, as we discover the Harry, Hermione and Ron-led Dumbledore's Army, the death of a close friend and Harry's first
kiss! =)...plus the chilling prophecy by Dumbledore: Harry must kill Voldemort or be murdered by him! Only one of them will survive!

Doing right is always the hardest thing!

cziplee-book-review

"It's a strange thing, but when you are dreading something, and would give anything to slow down time, it has a disobliging habit of speeding up." -Harry Potter & the Goblet of Fire-

HP not easy

In Book #4, signs emerged that Harry's number one nemesis, the evil Voldemort is marshalling his forces! Harry's fourth year at Hogwarts marks the Quidditch World Cup where Voldemort's followers gather and wreak havoc.

Another event, the legendary Triwizard Tournament also takes place, where student representatives from three different wizarding schools compete in a series of increasingly challenging contests. The 'Goblet of Fire' judges who gets in and who doesn't. On one fateful night, three champions are selected. But then the Goblet spits out one other. Harry's.

These two major events point to the return of Lord Voldemort. Dumbledore and the other teachers sense it, but it is inevitable. And Harry is no longer safe at Hogwarts

Will Harry be able to rise to the challenge for the Tri Wizard Tournament while keeping up with school or will the challenges along with Voldemort's rebirth be too much for Harry?

This fourth book is definitely the most dramatic, and also the scariest, so far! And oh, Harry figures that girls are soooo complicated! =)

What did we learn from Harry Potter 1-3?

In book 1, we learn about that there are more important things in life than books and cleverness...Friendship!
In the
Chamber of Secrets, we realise that the choices we make shows who we truly are, not our abilities.

cziplee-book-review

So in Book 3: Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban

HP3A HP3K

As he enter his third year at Hogwarts, Harry Potter has had enough of his relatives and he finally runs away from them. Instead of running away from trouble he finds himself facing trouble from more than one side: for using magic outside the school and from the news that a notorious criminal, serial killer Sirius Black, has escaped the high-security wizard's prison at Azkaban and apparently is headed for Harry. The school calls in supernatural help against Black in the form of Dementors (prison guards that drain the hope and happiness out of everyone around them) but unusual things continue to put Harry in peril.

The Dementors

picture from the Harry Potter Lexicon

He is thrown into a confusing panoply of shifting alliegences and shifting shapes where nobody is who or what they seem. Who is the real criminal? What is the real crime? Who is telling or knows the truth? On a brighter note, Harry gets a firebolt - a top of the line high performance flying broom... =)

We learned that:

Those we have lost are always with us, especially when we need them the most!

If you missed our previous Harry Potter post, be sure to check it out - all the questions we are asking as we anticipate the final chapter!

Bring on the Deathly Hallows!

After 6 books, there have been flying cars, wizards who can wipe clean one's memory, spells that backfire, Quidditch, a bunch of Dark Arts teachers, dial 911 and you'll get a phoenix to your rescue (that sort of moments), a giant 3-headed dog called Fluffy, romantic relationships, scary monsters, Portkeys, and well deaths we are at the end of the adventure!

So as the final chapter approaches...here are our top 5 questions that we seek answers for in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows!

1. Will
Dumbledore still play a role in the end?

avada

As most fantasy/wizardry stories (think Gandalf in the Lord of The Rings), the question remains whether Dumbledore is really dead? Afterlife is after all a mysterious thing in Harry Potter...

2. So who else dies?

RIPUK

Rowling said that "There are deaths, more deaths, coming!"
Will it be

Voldermort? Snape? Hermoine? Ron? or maybe even Harry

?

3. Good or evil?

Snape, possibly the most interesting character in the series...is he really evil? Does he even know which side he is in? He did kill Dumbledore and not really a nice person but...

snape_by_blackdios

Image: Snape by ~BlackDios on deviantART

4. Kiss, kiss, kiss!

HermoineHeartRon

Harry gets his in the Order of Phoenix, thanks to his longtime crush...Cho Chang!
In the end of
Half-Blood Prince; and after all the fliring and fighting, we all know that it's on for Ron and Hermoine...so will they? or do they both even survive?

5. Harry VS Voldermort: The Final Battle!

The Final Battle?

Its like this losing battle for both! As they are so interlinked/intertwined that if one wins, he will surely bound to lose something in the process!
Perhaps if Harry wins, he loses his scar? Now that's not so bad, huh?! But really, it won't be that simple!

So while we anticipate the ending, you can read our HP posts on our blog to bring you up-to-date with the story!

Check out CzipLee's ongoing countdown to final book here!

On to the Chamber of Secrets!

cziplee-book-review

Now Open

So the story picks up after a miserable summer with the Dursleys(Harry's human relatives), when Harry returns for another exciting year at Hogwarts! Yet something strange is happening at his school, a monster stalks the school grounds.

Students are being petrified (and by this, we mean - frozen in fear, think "The Ring", that sort of effect but "toned down" to cater to the younger audience) and a mysterious saying has been written on the wall:

"For the chamber of secrets has been opened!"
and another stating

"Ginny Weasley..her skeletons will lie forever".

Now that's way scary! Then again, morbidness somehow does interest everyone.

And who are the brave ones to rescue the lot?

You guessed it right! Harry and his loyal compatriots, Hermione, who has taken on a "feline" nature, as well as Ron, Moaning Myrtle (what a name, huh) and many others have come to literally- save the day. Look out for house-elf called Dobby! (cute, huh?)

If that has whet your appetite, well, the story is certainly getting to be a juicy, tender nice piece of steak, with bacon strips, mashed potatoes...Well, you get the picture =)

Quoted fortunately in the Chamber of Secrets:

"It is our choices, Harry, that show what we truly are, far more than our abilities."

-Aldus Dumbledore-

He also befriends Ron Weasley, the boy with flaming red hair and a muggle-born witch, Hermione. For One More Day by Mitch Albom

I devoured his book, page by page in just one day.

In specific? 4 hours! (And worth every cent I paid for the book!)

It was such an easy read, with the big print and a catchy storyline.

Best of all? It was well researched and based on a real life story.

More like? Iit was Albom's way of telling us to appreciate what we have right now.

His style of writing is easy - straight to the point, bits and pieces of adjectives to paint you a picture and you can see his love of sports jumping right off the pages. I would think one of his reason for choosing this tale above the rest of "unnatural" or "supernatural" tales was because this was very much - sports related, and Albom is a true blue sports journalist.

It is a fantastic read with Albom recounting the life of Charley page by page, the many times his mother stood up for him, and the times he never stood up for his mother.

It’s bittersweet to think that a child has to choose to "love" either his mom or his dad from young - and even when he turns into an adult - he still yearns for his dad's approval.

The twist or rather, the surreal element of the book is when he tries to commit suicide, and once again - in just that one day - he meets his mother once more. He talks to her, tries to right all the wrong - talk about his hurts, his appreciation for her (finally) and how he tries to come to term with his failed marriage and daughter's rejection of him.

His ma tells him that his relationship with his loved ones is still salvageable and when he finally wakes up and recovers - he does make right his wrongs.

People talk about the "light at the end of a dark tunnel", "supernatural experiences", "out of body experience", well this is once well-researched story where a credible name like Albom who puts forth his evidence for such occurrences. It is in part, quite eerie and yet - surreal (sorry, I love this word!) - because the three people his mum helps to "prettify" are actual people, who meet their Maker right on the day (or close enough date and time) to when he was experiencing that one more day with his mum.

Overall, it is a very good book - with a well written ending to the tale, and certainly, a book which you want to get for people who just don't have the time to appreciate their loved ones whilst they are still around.

My Favourite Roald Dahl Books

From chocolate rivers, oompa loompa's to Big Friendly Giants (BFGs) and little girls that possess great psyhic powers: there is only one man we credit all this to

Mr Roald Dahl.

And what's more, there is actually a "Celebrate Roald Dahl Day" which is today!
September 13, 2006!

There's certainly much to thank Roald Dahl for. I remember him for:

Matilda:
She was an inspiration to me, when I didn't like school and wanted to ZAP all those bad teachers away.

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory:
I loved the way Charlie cared and loved for his family, and how everyone ate cabbage soup everyday and slept in the same bed (his two sets of grandparents).Who could forget the amazing glass elevator, the notorious kid that kept picking his nose and the rather eccentric owner of the chocolate factory. It was magical!

BFG:
To my horror, giants stole kids sleeping soundly in their beds to gobble them up in giant land. But Big Friendly Giant gangs up with a young orphan (whom he also quietly steals away while she sleeps soundly) to help him! Heroism personified with Roald Dahl always battling for the orphan's plights!

Witches:
A bittersweet t
ale of a little boy orphaned from young, and brought up by his grandmother who often warned him about witches (like how our parents would warn us of not speaking to strangers!). Who can forget the dramatic tale of a witches conference being held during his holiday getaway with his grandma and how the the little boy gets turned into a mouse! And poor grandma has a mouse for a grandchild!

Boy:
I loved it. From the sweets he ate - gob stoppers to liquorices to quaint English meals and his games; his accidents, his very, very honest accounts of life. It was surreal.

Suffice to say, Roald Dahl is one of my favourite authors - so 3 cheers to celebrating
"Roald Dahl's Day!"
